Citizen Report: Sykesville Town Council Meeting – March 25, 2024

Antietam Broadband Plans Expansion into Sykesville Area

During the recent Sykesville Town Council meeting on March 25, 2024, Antietam Broadband’s Tony Heaton and his team made a compelling presentation about their plans to expand 10-25G fiber technology into residential homes and businesses in Carroll County. This Washington County-based company aims to provide broadband services in Sykesville and other areas within Carroll County, utilizing local employees for the installation. Antietam has already begun expanding into eight incorporated areas, including Sykesville, with no cost to residents or businesses. Girl Scout Troop 1633 Granted Permission to Paint Storm Drains

A heartwarming initiative by Girl Scout Troop 1633 was also discussed at the meeting. The troop requested approval to paint the storm drains in the Hawk Ridge neighborhood with a stencil stating “DON’T DUMP CHESAPEAKE BAY DRAINAGE” as part of their efforts to attain the Bronze Award. The Council unanimously approved the Troop’s request, showing support for their environmental awareness project.

Millard Cooper Park Bridge Rehabilitation Contract Approved

The Council deliberated on a bid by Mar-Allen for the rehabilitation of the pedestrian bridge in Millard Cooper Park using composite materials at an estimated cost of $88,000, mostly funded by grants. There was emphasis on ensuring regular repair and maintenance to uphold safety standards for park bridges and trails. The Town Manager proposed completing the project before the opening of the Splash Pad for summer. The Council unanimously approved the rehabilitation contract.

Closed Session for Warfield Lawsuits

An important closed session was held to address the pending Warfield lawsuits, in accordance with legal provisions for consulting on potential litigation matters.

Opportunities for Community Volunteering Discussed

The meeting also highlighted various volunteer opportunities within the Town, including roles in the Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Crossing Guard, and Police Auxiliary.
